COVID-19 has caused the Western Washington University community to lose many aspects of their social lives. In turn, students at Western have taken to Instagram to build and strengthen the community.
Western Washington University may be known for being a statue park and having an art gallery, but tattoos are just as important to Western’s art scene. Students often use tattoos as a form of expression or artwork on their bodies.
The Western Washington University Board of Trustees officially passed a housing initiative that will provide a three-tiered cost evaluation system for on-campus housing prices for students as well as an increase in the cost of base-level housing.
Sitting at their laptop, a Western Washington University student goes through the first module in the program entitled, “Sexual [Assault] Prevention Ongoing: Taking Action.” They move from page to page, exploring what the course contains, with definitions of sexual misconduct, a pre-course quiz and pages titled “Recognizing the Problem,” and “Microaggressions.”
In a survey of over 100 Western students, 70% report not knowing about the university’s Sustainability Action Plan written in 2015 and adopted in 2017.

“Many people, especially right now, are really eager to connect. [Talking to people] is welcome,” she said. Boyd said that the anxiety of meeting a date in person is often self imposed, and there’s an idea that every encounter is either a success or a failure. Stepping out of the right-versus-wrong mindset and focusing on having fun is key to dating success, Boyd said.
Lawnstock, Western's outdoor spring festival, will bring students together on the Communications Facility lawn and listen to live music while enjoying free food, games and other activities. There won’t be live musical performers as the pandemic winds down, but KUGS 89.3 FM Radio will provide a livestream, and games like cornhole and other activities will be provided along with squared off areas for students to gather with their small group of friends on campus.
A Western Washington University student has to cross campus in the middle of the night and feels unsafe. The old, Blue Light Alert phones are nowhere to be seen, so they reach out to the university police on a newly installed safety app. Promptly, a campus police officer with the dim light glinting on the lens of their body camera comes to the student’s location and walks them safely across campus. This could be the future of policing on Western’s campus.
The Black Student Union as a part of Western Washington University’s Black Student Organization, came together to create a list of demands for Western in June 2020. Amongst these was, “Prioritize the renaming of Huxley college... as well as re-evaluat[e] current buildings [names].”
Western Washington University student advocates for sustainability continue to work on and off campus to encourage food choice awareness for the health of themselves, their community and the planet.
After a lack of students applied to run for the Associated Student’s Executive and Senate board elections, an extended deadline to apply was granted by the AS elections coordinator, Mario Alemi.
