Viking XC gunning for regional success following conference sweep

Western cross-country men’s and women’s teams are heading into regionals with high hopes after sweeping the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in Monmouth, Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 5.  These first-overall placements for both teams mark their second GNAC sweep in the last three seasons and second in program history.  Division II cross-country West Regionals are set for Nov. 19 in Billings, Montana.

Holy Pow — La Niña good news for snow sports

Western students and Whatcom County residents who enjoy skiing and snowboarding are in luck this year — the Pacific Northwest is expected to have a snowy 2022-23 season due to a predicted La Niña winter.  La Niña is a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean.

Every year, Western Washington University's cheer team hosts clinics for anyone 14 or older to showcase their talent and get a sense of what college cheerleading is like. This year’s fall clinic will be held at Sam Carver Gymnasium on Nov. 13.

Western equestrian club's season set to begin

The Western Washington University Equestrian Club will be traveling to their first show of the 2020-23 season hosted by Oregon State University on Saturday, Nov. 12.  The club’s first competition was set for Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Spokane Equestrian Center, but co-hosts: Washington State University and the University of British Columbia, had to cancel the show due to a lack of horses.

How can exercise fight seasonal depression?

As November arrives in Bellingham, it brings shorter days and rainy weather.  For those who experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression, this raises concern. According to the National Library of Medicine, sunlight plays a role in regulating the brain's serotonin levels, which fights depression.

Saturday recap: goals and dunks

The Western Washington University Vikings crushed it at home on Saturday, Oct. 29, with women’s soccer shutting out Saint Martin’s University and men’s basketball dominating Douglas College.

Women's soccer breezes through competition on the road

The Western Washington University women's soccer team improved its win streak to six games in a row (10-1-3) after its 3-0 victory against Montana State University Billings on Saturday, Oct. 15. This match was the last of four consecutive games played on the road.   With an undefeated record in conference play (9-0-1), the Vikings are first in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. The team is also ranked seventh in Division II NCAA organizations across the nation.

Western men’s rowing launches new season

Western men’s rowing is back on the water and looking to compete after medaling at the American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta in May.  The club brought both gold and bronze medals back to Bellingham in the spring. Being the first national placements in club history, it was a major triumph and motivator for the Western men’s crew team.  After a summer off, the club hopes their victories last spring will propel their performance forward this season.

Vikings down rival Seattle Pacific 3-1 at home, lose 2-1 on the road to Simon Fraser

The Western Washington University men’s soccer team has been making the most of their opportunities this season. With a 3-1 win over Seattle Pacific on Oct. 1, the Vikings were in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. However, after a 2-1 loss on Oct. 6 to Simon Fraser, the Vikings are now tied for first with Simon Fraser and Northwest Nazarene.

Bellingham fills with music as Downtown Sounds concerts return

A few thousand people welcomed the return of the summer Downtown Sounds concerts as 1980s music from the band Nite Wave played across downtown Bellingham. The concert on Wednesday, July 6, was the first of five concerts happening downtown throughout July and August put on by the Downtown Partnership. They are among a few different free concert events planned this summer throughout the city.

“In case nobody told you today… you’re special,” said Melissa Viviane Jefferson, or as most people know her, Lizzo.  She’s the queen of spreading self-love and positivity through her music.  Lizzo released her fourth studio album, “Special,” on July 15, 2022, and it’s her most empowering one yet.

Rocket League Club at Western

Rocket League Club President, fourth-year Kanyen Sherwood, was interested in the Western Washington University club even before he arrived on campus.  “I have an embarrassing amount of hours into this game,” Sherwood said. “When I committed to going to Western, the first thing I did was type into google ‘WWU Rocket League.’”
