Western professor’s art balances conflicting perspectives at the Western Gallery

Walking into the Western Gallery this quarter, visitors will quickly lock eyes with “My Life as a Suburban Ind’n”, a painting by John Feodorov that offers a glimpse into his childhood in the Los Angeles suburbs, as well as the complexities of being Indigenous in the modern day. As he matured, Feodorov created a balance between the two sides of his upbringing. And in that balance, he was able to find inspiration for his work.

WAWU set to vote on executive board elections

Western Academic Workers United is voting to establish its inaugural executive board. All 20 positions on the board will hold equal powers of administration, which include president, vice president, sergeant at arms and recording secretary, among others.

WWU IDs go digital

For the first time, Western Washington University is offering a mobile Western Card. This change coincides with Whatcom Transportation Authority’s decision to begin to move all bus passes to the UMO Mobility App in the next three years.

Western Washington University marked October as the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The university continues the national, yearslong advocacy campaign that Western began participating in 2019, said WWU Survivor Advocacy Services Coordinator Deidre Evans.

Ridgeway Commons food tour showcases new additions

Western Washington University’s Ridgeway Commons will be hosting a food tour for First Year Eats program students on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The event aims to welcome students by guiding them through the various food stations, as well as allowing them to meet the dedicated members of the university’s dining staff.

A separate student death in 24-hour period shocks Western campus

The Bellingham community was stunned by the news of a student death in the Alma Clark dorms, following a devastating announcement earlier the same morning that a student had died from a fall at the Nash dorms. Given the concern that had stemmed from two deaths within such a short period of time, the university was quick to assure that there was no perceived threat to the campus community.

WWU student dies from apparent fall at North campus dorm

A Western Washington University student died from a fall off of the Nash Hall dorms on the evening of Oct. 9, according to a statement released by the university the following morning.The incident is still under investigation by law enforcement; however, there is no suspicion of foul play.

Students gathered in Red Square for a protest held by WWU Divest Apartheid on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m., Many embraced each other, as they listened to speakers recite speeches, poems and information regarding the movement’s actions and calls for financial clarity against the Western Washington University administration.

Dense crowds of students shuffled from table to table, meeting new faces and collecting goodies at the Fall Info Fair, hosted by Associated Students on Sept. 23 and 24. The annual event provides an opportunity for students to discover and engage with hundreds of organizations, on-and-off campus.

People want to get from point A to B in the quickest way but sometimes that path isn’t the one engineered by cities, or in this case, a university. Instead of taking the paved routes designed for foot traffic, we find shortcuts, cutting across lawns or hills to reach the destination quicker.

Two sculptures swap places on WWU campus this summer

Western Washington University's Old Main and Wilson Library lawn are inviting a new sculpture to the area. The Bigger Big Chair, created by David Ireland, will make the move from the woods of the Fairhaven dorms to its originally intended location near the heart of campus.
