A Western Washington University student died from a fall off of the Nash Hall dorms on the evening of Oct. 9, according to a statement released by the university the following morning.

Emergency services were called at 10:30 p.m. the previous night, according to University President Sabah Randhawa’s statement. Responders performed medical assistance on the student once they arrived at the scene, before the student was pronounced dead.

The incident is still under investigation by law enforcement; however, there is no suspicion of foul play. The Bellingham Police Department and University Police could not be reached for a statement at this time. Randhawa assured Western community members that the student’s family had been contacted and that further details of the loss will be released pending the consent of the family and completion of the investigation.

“As our community navigates this painful moment, let us remember that it is in times like these that we must lean on each other, mourn together and not let anyone who may be suffering do so alone,” Randhawa said in the statement.

For students coping with these recent events, resources and assistance can be found at the WWU Counseling and Wellness Center, whose phone number is 360-650-3164. Similarly, faculty can go through the Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455.

Other community members can also look to Whatcom and nationally based behavioral health services which can be found here.
