Concerts are one of my favorite past times outside of school. Catching a show in Seattle is one of the best ways to spend a weekend or a weekday if you’re willing to get up early the next morning for that 10 a.m. class.

If the trek down to Seattle doesn’t spark your interest, the Bellingham music scene is rich with artists of all genres and our city has an abundance of live shows. Here are my picks for upcoming concerts worth catching through mid-February:

Jan. 29 - The Lemon Twigs at Columbia City Theater: Making a stop in Seattle while finishing up their North American tour, The Lemon Twigs aren’t a band you want to miss. Fronted by both Brian and Michael D’Addario, the sibling duo and their band put on an indie glam rock show reminiscent of the classic rock of the 1960s, but with a whimsical twist. They’re also playing in Vancouver at Venue Nightclub if you’d rather catch them in Canada.

Feb. 2 - MadScience, Nova Darlings, Rose's Thorn at Make.Shift Art Space: Head down to Make.Shift here in Bellingham for a night of psychedelic rock and grunge pop. Tip: Hit the ATM before the show! Make.Shift is cash only.

February 8 - The Penmanship Tour at The Shakedown: For fans of hip-hop, who are over 21, this tour stopping in Bellingham features underground artists Blu and Skyzoo with special guest Landon Wordswell. Tip: Grab tickets online before the day of the show to save time and money at the door.

Feb. 9 - KZAX Presents Forest Ray, Cat Valley and The Hott Waxxx DeeJays at the Bellingham Alternative Library: Seattle and Bellingham bands take the Alternative Library stage for February’s KZAX Presents show. Start your Saturday night with a DJ set and end it with feminist surf punk and shoegaze! Tip: KZAX Presents shows happen monthly and feature independent artists across venues in Bellingham. Keep your eyes open for one each month.

Feb. 13 - Jesse McCartney at Showbox Sodo: Whether you’re looking to relive the early 2000s or want to hear some of his new music live, Jesse McCartney’s stop in Seattle is exciting. Catch him at the Showbox Sodo for The Resolution Tour. Tip: If you’re over 21 you can skip the line and get in early, possibly snagging yourself a front row spot for your favorite Disney heartthrob.

Feb. 14 - Baby Cakes at the Wild Buffalo House of Music: Don’t have Valentines Day plans? Get your groove on and celebrate with 10 person band Baby Cakes for a night of funk and R&B.
Feb. 15 - Triptides, Winter and Razzleberry at the Bellingham Alternative Library: This Alternative Library show brings indie pop and dream punk from both Bellingham and Los Angeles! Tip: No one is turned away for lack of funds at the Alternative Library.
