Do you have a sweet tooth? Do you believe dessert really should come first? Well, you're in luck Bellingham has plenty of spots to satisfy your sweet tooth any time of day.
If the phrase "sweet treat" sounds familiar to you, chances are you’ve had an encounter or two with the recently acquired term on TikTok. But what is a sweet treat? How is it different from a run-of-the-mill dessert?
"A dessert belongs to a specific time of day, usually after dinner, and is bigger, it's like a fourth meal, versus a sweet treat which might be smaller and can be enjoyed quickly at any time of day,” said Katie Cobb, a Bellingham resident, who has a serious sweet tooth.
In such a case, let's investigate different options for rewarding your sweet tooth at different times throughout the day.
Morning
If you wake up itching for something sweet, look no further than Sweet AS Waffles. Open at 9 a.m., seven days a week, this spot off Magnolia Street is the perfect place to start your day.
Though not your typical waffles, Sweet AS Waffles sports an extensive menu that is sure to suit your sweet tooth. Although they have their classics, their menu is always changing to offer exciting seasonal waffles.
The waffles aren't the only sweet item on the menu. Sweet AS Waffles offers a wide variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic sweet drink concoctions.
“One of our most popular staple menu waffles is the Baker Blast, which is like a cheesecake spread, graham cracker and berry syrup,” said Sam Townsend, an employee at Sweet AS Waffles. “I’m a little biased since I adore Tiramisu, but the Tiramisurous Rex is my favorite seasonal waffle. It has a mascarpone tiramisu spread, crushed Nilla Wafers, sprinkle of coffee and cocoa – it's truly out of this world.”
In case you don't make it in the morning crowd, Sweet AS Waffles has something special for late-night patrons. Among their extensive “bevy menu,” with 30+ alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, is a Shotski. This snow ski strapped with four boot-shaped shot glasses is an elevated way to throw a shot back with friends.
Afternoon
If your craving strikes in the middle of the day, there's a spot where you can quench your desire, as well as your boredom. Ice cream shop Cyro Rolls, located in the Granary building of downtown Bellingham, elevates ice cream to a new level.
Unlike your average ice cream shop, Cyro Rolls uses its liquid mixtures on cold plates to freeze personalized ice cream rolls right in front of you.
Cyro Rolls’ following on TikTok has grown to nearly two million since they began creating content in 2021. Their huge follower gain is no coincidence, as the shop frequently goes live to show followers fun clips of the ice cream rolling progress.
“A reason I adore this shop is that they even offer an entertaining interactive option where you can sign up and learn how to roll your own ice cream,” said Taylor Jones, Bellingham food blogger. “As fun as it is, the best part is still eating it.”
Evening
When dinner rolls around, check out District Brewing's Sandlot Pizza for a little something that isn't your typical dessert menu item.
For The Sandlot special, you must go to Mount Vernon. There's more to this place than beer. It lives and breathes pie – of the pizza variety. So much so that they offer their own selection of dessert pies.
With Nutella-covered marshmallows, chocolate chips, chopped Reese's and graham crackers, The Sandlot is anything but your average pizza.
“It's the perfect size and the perfect amount of sweetness, and you wouldn't think a brewery has a dessert option,” Jones said.
Late Night
You are not alone if you find yourself needing a little sugar when the clock strikes midnight.
“I undoubtedly get the strongest cravings for it at night,” Cobb said. “Generally when I'm winding down and about to go to bed.”
If you’re finding it challenging to fall asleep without a treat, insomnia may be your answer. The cookie shop, that is.
Whether it’s cookies, cookie wiches and cakes, or just about anything in between, Insomnia Cookies has it. They’ve got the classics – chocolate chunk, snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin – or you can opt for a deluxe cookie, such as the chocolate peanut butter cup or s’mores.
Open till one in the morning, Insomnia is nestled in the Sehome Village Shopping Center, comfortably close to Western Washington University.
Speaking of comfort, if their menu wasn't enough, Insomnia delivery service allows you to enjoy this late-night sweet treat without leaving home.
