Western women's basketball team strung together the ninth longest win streak in school history after beating Northwest Nazarene University 84-73. This is the longest streak for the team since the 2011 season. The winning run has given the Vikings a 19-3 record overall and 13-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The team is in second place in the GNAC behind  University of Alaska Anchorage. Western is tied for the No. 21 ranking in the nation, according to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll. Junior guard Maia Barnett is happy with the streak and said the team’s focus is what got them to this point. “[The streak] is a great thing. We just try not to think about about it too much,” Barnett said. “It shows how hard we work and how we’re doing it all together.” The longest recorded streak for the Vikings was 21 games from Dec. 21, 2005 to March 10, 2006. They ended that year with a 27-2 overall record, winning the GNAC and reaching the semi-finals of West Regionals in the national tournament. The Vikings streak began Dec. 19, after beating Eastern New Mexico University away 67-55. This wins continued with their most recent game Saturday, Feb. 4 when they beat Northwest Nazarene. The game was back and forth and ended with the Vikings having a 46-38 halftime lead. Northwest Nazarene bounced back in the third quarter outscoring Western 20-15, making the game 61-58. Western was able to hold on to their lead though and won the game 84-73.

“We want to be national champions. We want to make it to regionals. We want to make it to that national tournament.”

Tia Briggs
Senior forward Tia Briggs has had a huge contribution in the team’s success, with her game against Seattle Pacific University on Jan. 14 being the best. She scored a career-high 25 points and got 10 rebounds giving her a double-double that night. Briggs said this streak has been because of their team effort and ability to rely on each other. “We’re just always reminding each other of what our goals are,” Briggs said. “We want to be national champions. We want to make it to regionals. We want to make it to that national tournament.” One key component in their consistency has been senior guard Taylor Peacocke. She has 1,697 career points, which is the third most in school history. This season she has scored 25 or more points in half their games.

Carmen Dolfo has been the head coach for 26 seasons and generated the most wins of any coach in Western’s women's basketball history. “We have good depth. There’s a lot of players on our team who can play. They’re very team oriented,” Dolfo said. One thing both the coach and players emphasized was they only are focusing on one game at a time. “We’re thinking every game is like our playoff game because everything matters at this point,” sophomore forward Nikki Corbett said. “It’s only going to get more difficult from here.” The Vikings will be playing against rivals Seattle Pacific University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in Seattle with hopes of extending their streak to 14 games.
