BRIEF: Put love into every petal

Local florist Trish Manley shares tips for creating the perfect Valentine’s bouquet

If you’re looking to get more hands-on with your Valentine’s Day gifts this year, consider these tips from a local florist to create your very own bouquet.

Do: Pick a color scheme or focal flower

For those who may not have much experience with flower arranging, Trish Manley, owner of A New Leaf Flower Shoppe, recommends starting with a focal flower or a color scheme.

“A lot of people are still very traditional with the red roses, but we like to give people different options,” Manley said.

Do: Be observant

Even if you aren’t sure about specifics, paying attention to what your partner is drawn to is often a helpful starting place.

“The people that really listen to their partner will come in and [ask questions],” Manley said. “They don’t know the names of all the flowers, but they know their partner really likes them.”

Don’t: Stress about budget

The shop sells pre-arranged bouquets at various price points. There are also ways to keep costs low, such as purchasing items that are in season.

“You can do something with $10,” Manley said. “Whatever your budget, I like to work with people and create something special.”

Do: Come in and explore options

A New Leaf prides itself on being a custom flower shop and sometimes has novelty options on hand; it’s a good idea to stop by and gather inspiration.

“We try to give you ideas and work with you… so I think it’s kind of fun for people,” Manley said.

Don’t: Wait until the last minute

Manley said Valentine’s Day is their busiest day of the year, so she recommends coming in before the holiday.

Purchasing flowers in advance means you can secure the options you want. There are also various care steps you can take to ensure the flowers stay fresh for longer.

Follow these tips, and you’ll craft an un-bud-lievable bouquet sure to make your love blossom.
