After several students and an event organizer unknowingly ate cannabis-infused pasta at an boycott of Aramark dining services at Western hosted by Shred the Contract on March 8, 2019, the student organization released a statement on their new food safety protocol.
Although the pasta was brought by volunteers unaffiliated with Shred the Contract, the organization received backlash from members of Western’s community following the incident.
According to a Facebook post from Shred the Contract, several students went to the health center after eating the pasta, and the organizer was unable to continue participating in the boycott.
In response, on Monday, March 18, the organizers drafted a list of food protocols they aim to follow for upcoming events.
According to Shred the Contract’s Food Safety Protocol, the following actions outline the organization’s commitment to ensure participant safety,
- Review and approval of third-party volunteers who will be serving food at future Shred the Contract events.
- Food served to participants will be prepared in an industrial kitchen, with at least one person carrying a food handler’s permit to supervise.
- All food served at future Shred the Contract events will have an accurate and clear ingredients list for participants.
