Nate Jo has been elected for the position of Associated Students Vice President for Business and Operations, according to the AS Elections website. The announcement came this morning after a three-day special election ended Wednesday, Feb. 27 in which nine candidates were vying for the position that will last until the end of spring quarter 2019.
Votes were counted in a series of rounds where the candidate with the lowest votes was eliminated each round. In the final round of the vote count, Jo had received the most with 242 votes. Jo was followed by Michael Protska with 205 and Skyla Sorenson received 157 votes.
The student body also voted in support of changes to the AS constitution by a margin of 91 percent, according to the AS website. The new constitution will take effect immediately after the election, according to coverage by The Western Front. The new AS constitution changes the structure of the AS student government and will eliminate the AS VP for Business and Operations position at the end of spring quarter.
Jo ran on a platform focusing on the need for gender neutral bathrooms and mental health services on campus as well as increased budget transparency within the AS, according to previous coverage of the candidate forum by The Western Front.
“We have to justify every single dollar that the AS spends,” Jo said at the candidate forum on Monday, Feb. 25.
The special election came after 92.3 percent of students voted to recall the previous AS VP for Business and Operations Genaro Meza-Roa, according to previous coverage by the Western Front.
