The application deadline for the recently vacated AS Vice President for Business and Operations position is rapidly approaching. Associated Students election officials are encouraging people interested in entering the upcoming AS special election to fill the vacant board position to file before the deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The position was vacated after former VP Genaro Meza-Roa was recalled via a student-wide recall election by a margin of 92 percent.
Whoever wins the election will serve for the duration of the original term, which ends the Friday of finals week spring quarter, according to the position's job description.
AS Elections Coordinator Alec Willis said students interested in running can pick up an application in the AS Board of Directors Office in the Viking Union. Completed applications must be returned to the office by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Voting will be open to the entire student body and will occur between Monday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, Feb. 27. Voting will happen via the AS Western Involvement Network.
Willis said this is the first time a special election has occurred at Western and that it is important that students vote in this election because all votes matter. He said that current board members have helped push forward a lot of change within the AS.
“It shows that the people who are voted in, and by extension the votes that elected them, are important and do matter,” Willis said. “Not to mention that those votes can be close, especially in elections with a lot of candidates, as this one is looking out to be.”
Willis said he expects voter turnout to be comparable to the AS Student Senate elections earlier this year.
”I think that whatever voter turnout we get, these voters will be involved voters and informed voters,” Willis said.
