At least five Western students have been diagnosed with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease within the last two weeks according to a message from the Student Health Center.The mild viral illness that typically affects young children is now being seen more in college populations among non-immune individuals, the message said. The disease is spread through direct contact, like coughing, sneezing, and sharing utensils and drinks.Symptoms include lesions in the mouth and on the hands and feet, as well as cough, fever, and body aches. However, these usually resolve in five to seven days, according the alert.The campus communication reminds students to avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking and vaping devices and encourages students to cover coughs and sneezes.Students can contact the Student Health Center if they have symptoms of concern: (360) 650-3400.More information can be found at
