This Saturday, the Kulshan Chorus will combine songs, choreography and spoken word to bring awareness to sexual assault and provide an artistic representation of the #MeToo movement.
Audiences can enjoy two powerful performances of the “Breaking Silence” concert at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at Bellingham High School.
Kulshan Chorus, in partnership with Bellingham High School and local professional dance company, Kuntz and Company, have created a concert intended to tell stories of persistence, triumph and resilience. Dustin Willetts, artistic director and conductor of Kulshan Chorus said the group will pass this message along using art, music and choreography.
A percentage of the concert’s proceeds will benefit both the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center and Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services.
Willetts said Kulshan Chorus is honored to partner with these organizations that serve and support women,. Representatives from organizations will be at the event and available to speak with audience members about the show’s content or the organization’s services.
Willetts said he hopes the concert prompts more discussion about the #MeToo movement.
“I hope that the concert artistically opens minds and helps people to be willing to think about and dwell on it,” he said.
Willetts encouraged community members to come to the concert for its powerful message.
“It’s something to experience,” he said. “It’s designed to transcend words. That’s what art, music and choreography does. We’re trying to create an experience that is more powerful than words. You have to come and see what it’s going to be.”.
Admission is $20 for the general public, $15 for seniors and students and $5 for youth.
