Even on a cold, windy weekday morning in April, you will still find people filtering in and out of Lafeen’s Family Pride Donuts and Ice Cream on Electric Avenue.
While they serve coffee and ice cream as well, I’d venture to guess it’s the donuts that have families piling in on the weekends.
The smell of fresh dough hits you at the entrance and the variety of donuts gleaming in the display cases is almost overwhelming.
The staff is very friendly and the regular frosted donuts will only set you back 75 cents, a great deal for cash-strapped college students. The fritters, bear claws and turnovers are priced at $2.25, but their size makes them well worth the extra money. The apple fritter is a personal favorite of mine and often big enough to share.
One of the things that makes Lafeen’s special is their hours.
Opening at 6:00 a.m. every day, they’re available to the early-riser crowd. However, unlike most bakeries, which close in the afternoon or early evening, Lafeen’s is open late. They close at 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and are open until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
While the donuts are delicious and fresh anytime, the trick is to go late at night.
After 7:30 p.m. or so, the donuts for the next day are being made and customers can snag a warm donut for an after-dinner snack. For a stressed-out college student, or anyone with a late-night craving, this might be the perfect fix.
Lafeen’s is located at 1466 Electric Ave. off Lakeway Drive, conveniently close to the main entrance of Whatcom Falls Park. You could grab a donut or two, and go for a nature stroll at the falls.
