By Taylor Nichols University Police actively patrolled campus Friday in search of a man who reportedly exposed himself to a female student outside Ridgeway Gamma residence hall early Friday morning, Oct. 27, said Paul Cocke, Western’s communications and marketing director. The student reported the man tried to enter the hall and rattled the locked door around 3 a.m. He saw her sitting in a lounge area on the southwestern side of the building and exposed himself before running away, according to a Western Alert sent out after the incident. "I think it's important to note that this student showed excellent judgement by not opening the door when that person came to it," Cocke said. "Students should never let somebody into a residence hall they don't know." The Bellingham Police Department has been notified. It is not known at this time if this incident is related to the string of similar incidents involving lewd conduct and voyeurism near campus, according to the Western Alert. If students feel unsafe walking on campus at night, they can request a Greencoat public safety assistant to accompany them by calling (360) 650-3555. Students with any information about the incident should call University Police at 3911, or their anonymous reporting line at (360) 650-SAFE (7223).
