Women's basketball wins game, continues streak

Western women’s basketball team extended their six-game winning streak with a 67-53 victory over Saint Martin’s University after getting off to a slow start Thursday, Jan. 12. Senior guard Taylor Peacocke, ranked as the leading scorer in the NCAA division II averaging 23.3 points per game, scored 23 points. “It's good momentum,” Peacocke said. “Every game we’re building off of it. We’re learning new things and getting better every game.”

“We just looked each other in the eye and [said] ‘we’ve got to get this together.’”

In the first quarter, Saint Martin’s quickly took an 8-point lead leaving the Vikings struggling in the first and second quarter. The teams traded the lead until halftime, landing them in a 27-27 tie. Western scored 40 points in the second half, maintaining a solid lead from the middle of the third quarter until the end. “We just looked each other in the eye and [said] ‘we’ve got to get this together,’” Peacocke said. “We worked on it all week so it was controllable things.” Senior forward Rachel Albert scored six points and picked up a career high 13 rebounds in the game which took place on her 22nd birthday. “At halftime we were focusing on blocking out, defending the drive and also having good shifts on defense, so I think we executed [better] in the second half,” Albert said. In her 26th season of coaching at Western, head coach Carmen Dolfo saw the difficulty her team had putting points on the board. “I don’t necessarily think we took poor shots, I think they just weren’t falling for us so we tried to break the defense down a little bit more,” Dolfo said. “Saint Martin’s did a good job of playing defense and taking away some of the things we like to do.”
