Finding a book that not only makes you laugh but also discusses challenging topics, is not a combination that a person finds very often. “Breakfast of Champions,” by Kurt Vonnegut, junior Madison Bradner’s book recommendation of the week, does exactly this.
“It is a comedy but also a social satire,” Bradner said. “It gets into some serious social issues but presents them in a funny way.”
The novel follows the story of a writer named Kilgore Trout who meets a car dealer from the midwest who is taking his fiction as the truth.
You follow the relationship between Dwayne Hoover, the salesmen, and Trout to an explosive ending she didn't want to reveal, Bradner said.
She first heard about this book from her cousin who told her about a quote from the book.
“Kilgore Trout once wrote a short story which was a dialogue between two pieces of yeast. They were discussing the possible purposes of life as they ate sugar and suffocated in their own excrement. Because of their limited intelligence, they never came close to guessing that they were making champagne.”
This is now her favorite quote from any book, and the reason she decided to read it in the first place, Bradner said.
