This week we interviewed Senior Mallory Suggs, a double major in outdoor recreation and communication studies from Monroe, Wash.Q: Why did you pick Western? A: I chose Western because my dad’s side of the family went here. It’s close enough to my hometown, but I can [still] be in a different place. Western also had the program I was interested in. Q:What has your favorite class been so far? A: I really liked my debate class that I took last year. The professor that I had was really into having us know about world events but not making us feel dumb if we didn’t know them.Q:What do you like to do around Bellingham? A: I like to go hiking a lot, especially around Mt. Baker and Chuckanut. I like to try and find different things to do. The other day I went to the trampoline park and did that for the first time.Q: What is the best advice you could offer to students?A: My best piece of advice would be to take classes that you don’t necessarily think you are interested in. I took my first recreation class not wanting to major in recreation. I ended up absolutely loving it, and now I am trying to get a job in recreation.Q: What might surprise people about you?A: I collect souvenir spoons whenever I travel somewhere. I ask people to get me souvenir spoons when they go someplace. One of my friends is a boat captain. He went to Korea and Saipan and brought me back spoons; it was really exciting.Q:One of your most memorable stories from Western? A: For my first two quarters at Western, I was a coxswain for the men’s crew team. I got to cox one of the races. Even though I didn’t do it very long and I wasn’t able to continue, it was still something I am going to remember for a while.
